So you're interested in signing up to compete in the highland games? That's awesome! But here's the thing, it can get a little complicated. Each event, athletic director (AD), and organizing body has their own unique way of doing things. On top of that, there are invite-only events and various classes to consider. But don't worry, we've got you covered! We'll explain everything right here...

Classes

Amateur C / Novice - This class if for first time Throwers and beginners. Not all games will have this class. Some offer this as a day of sign up and throw event. ex: Stone Mountain Highland Games offers a clan challenge for new throwers.

Amateur B - This class is also an entry level class for first timers, beginners, and experienced not yet qualifying for A Class.

Amateur A - This class if for more experience throwers who are invited up to the higher level and is the step below Pros. You would need to win a few B class or Open events and have your numbers at a certain distance to be invited up.

Women - This class is for women only and is typically an open class for all skill levels.

Elite Women - This class is for women only who are more experienced and invited up to the higher level, similar to A class.

Pro - The highest level of Scottish Athletics, prize money is awarded according to placing. This class is usually entered by invitation.

Masters - This class is for throwers of ages 40 and up. The exact range of the age group can vary; usually it is either 40+, 45+, or 50+.

Lightweight - This class is an Amateur class in which all throwers weight 200lb. or less. Depending on the game it might vary.

Lightweight Women - This class is an Amateur class in which all throwers weight 150lb. or less. Depending on the game it might vary.

Organizations - This is the easiest and most convenient option for athletes. The organization will have a schedule of games and dates that they offer for athletics. About 30-60 days before the event, the registration will become available on the organization's website. You can use their registration platform to sign up, which will also give you access to a wide range of games in your area.

Events - Some games are an all in one type and they provide all the game day logistics. If so, they will have their own AD and and you will need to register directly through the games AD and/or website.

Athletic Directors - Some of the AD's will run the athletics for multiple events and you will need to sign up directly with the AD.  You should be able to find the AD through the games website or through social media and networking.

The most direct solution is to visit the website of the games you wish to compete in and find the athletics or completion page. This page will usually have the name of the AD who oversees the games and their contact information. They can guide you on how to sign up.

Keep in mind that not all events operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Some select a subset of applicants to compete, while others are invite-only. Don't be disheartened if you don't get an invitation or aren't chosen - there are always other opportunities to participate.
